Guitar Tutor of the Year Award 2009
Press Release.
RGT recognises Kent teacher at its annual conference
The Registry of Guitar Tutors (RGT) recently presented its Guitar Tutor of the Year award to Graham Corbould, a guitar teacher from Bexleyheath, Kent, at its recent annual conference at Thames Valley University in London.
Corbould, who has been entering students for RGT exams since 1994, was awarded with an engraved trophy and a cheque for £500. He commented: “I’m honoured to receive this Award. The RGT exams provide a structure for teaching contemporary guitar and a yardstick by which to measure and plan progress. The RGT grades are not only for those with an academic need, most of my students play the guitar for their own enjoyment and passing grades adds to that sense. The age range of my last set of candidates was 10 to 62 years. The 62 year old being a life long 'strummer' who has now progressed to Grade five.”
RGT Director, Tony Skinner, added: “This award reflects Graham’s consistently high standard of guitar teaching as shown by the repeated achievements of his students in the RGT exams.”
Graham Corbould was also runner up in 2007 and 2008.
The award was discontinued in 2010 when the sponsors withdrew support due to difficult financial conditions.

Background
Since 1994 I have been teaching what would best be described as contemporary guitar, namely electric rhythm and lead, acoustic and bass. In addition to 15 years experience, I hold a teaching diploma from the London College of Music in Electric Guitar tuition (DipLCM (TD)). In 2008 I was a finalist in the RGT (Registry of Guitar Tutors) Tutor of the year award. Full CRB check in place.
Approach
My emphasis is on the practical aspects of playing as opposed to heavy theory or laborious study of specific pieces. I teaching the 'building blocks' (chords, scales, techniques) which can be put together by the player for their pleasure and development.
As a songwriter, I am also happy to aid in song writing looking at musical structure, use of chords, arrangements etc.
Every student is unique in terms of their ability and wishes and are treated so. Tuition can be informal (just learning for fun) or for those who wish for a more formal approach, I offer the full range of RGT/LCM grade exams. These not only aid in the development of the player but also count towards formal qualifications and college entry. (For RGT web site click here)
Lessons are usually half an hour in duration. Teaching can be on a individual basis or in small groups, school/peripatetic tutoring is also undertaken.
